Christmas in July Quilt 7-30-2010

I have the quilt top finished for Grand #3 Christmas gift.
I used everything for my fabric closet, but I did have to head to the store
and purchase gray thread.

I didn't put it on the clothes line, way to hot here for all that work.
Just put it over the fence and quickly took pictures.

The patterns here are from "Get to the Center of It", the newest PDF download
that I added this week.

I don't know how I'll finish this one, hand or machine

Goodwill Trip

I love Goodwill and I know it sounds strange, but the place just makes me smile.
This is what I found this past week.

I'm going to do my thing to it and add it to my office/sewing room.
I cleaned it, sanded just a bit and primed.

I added a base coat of pink, and then 2 more coats.

Added highlights and a couple of coats of top sealer.

It looks very nice in my office/sewing room and
made me feel better about not redo everything in the room. (I've started the living room!)

In the Mail

I'm very fortunate to have wonderful friends who give me friendship and  support in everything I do. At the end of June I received this surprise in the mail. I don't receive things very often so I REALLY enjoy just having them to look at.

Well, it's mid to late July and I opened it and Look ! !

It's a wonderful movie, we popped popcorn, had a lemon water and watched. Very good,
Thank you, my very dear friend, you are wonderful for thinking of me.

Putting it all together
We've had loads of company this summer and I enjoy putting a nice bed together for them. Everything is washed and dried on the line, I love the smell of the sheets and the way they are a bit stiff.

I also, wash and line dry my quilts, adding the quilt and pillows.

Have to have the something pretty,
I like flowers, a book or magazine and I'll add treats and water the day of their arrival.

I lay a down comforter on the bottom,
just in case they are a bit chilled with the air being on.

And a little step up, the new bed is tall.

Stop in at My Romantic Home too and see all the wonder !

WELL,  look what I started. A few weeks ago
I showed my office/sewing room, as shown here.

For some reason, everyone thought I needed to clean out. ( and yes maybe I did) So, with boxes in hand and garbage bags close, I started. Found a couple of things I'd been thinking about, three dollars and a book I need to return to a friend. So, after about 2 hours of work,

I have to say, "I hate it ! " It's not me, I like the idea of it being all pretty, all painted and shiny. But being in there the past 2 days. It's not me, the television is coming back in, the fabric will be back on the floor, and I'll be hanging everything with yellow headed straight pins.

And then, it hit me, "What does this say about me?" I like the mess, I work better with mess
or what I'm sticking with, "I'm just more creative with all my things around me." and there it is.

MY things, my hopes, my dreams, my ideas. It just hit me as I wrote, "My things."

When the Grands Come to Town

The Grand's are in town and they have to pick the quilt they sleep under. I know, we've had a heat index of over 100, the past couple of days, but at Grandma's..... they have quilts.... they know no different.  They are very quilt savy and they debate, who get's what quilt.

You must know, this have nothing to do with me, it is all about Grandpa's fishing quilt, one on right and Grandpa's fishing pillow ! You see, you can't have both the quilt and pillow, so they talk it over (each night) and who ever gets the pillow has to take one of Grandma's quilts.

And, this time it took two of 'Grandma's" quilts to please the loser, of the fishing quilt drama.
It may have to do with the PINK ? (boys) Just a thought
You should see Grandpa's face when this is all going on ! Priceless.

Christmas in July Part 3

I have all the blocks finished and laid them out on the bed.

My back has not been right for a couple of days and I didn't want to get on the floor and crawl around, BUT as you can see I couldn't really see the blue blocks, on my pink quilt.

Laid out on the floor I moved them around until I like their placement. Always do this, there is not right or wrong way for placement, but certain blocks just look better next to others.

Christmas in JULY Part 2

I have a great start on my holiday already, remember "Leon"
I was asked recently, "Why I do my instructions showing one blocks cutting and say multiply by the number of blocks needed?"
I've seen so many quilters, cut out a whole quilt, do one block and not like it.  With this quilt I pieced loads of the triangles and then cut 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"  squares, mixed and matched each block as I went.

I like a scrap quilt to be scrappy, but also to be very able to see the pattern of the block.

I'm loving my time in my sewing room, Keep watching,

Christmas in JULY

Long ago Christmas in July was a celebration to get people together in the hot summer and try to remember the cold of the winter. Cold food was served and small gifts where given. I think today it's our family picnic in the park, getting every one together to celebrate family.

But over the years at my house, it has become quilt starting time. I start my holiday list for gift giving and ask some questions of family.

This year I had requests for a couple of little boy quilts. I'm in the year of the scraps and I pulled out blues, beige, tan and gold. I try very hard not to go with to many flowers,(their boy)  just bold colors.  I wash all my fabric after I purchase it, so with iron in hand,  I go through press and lay out what I like.

My next PDF "Little Quilt Ladies" pattern will be a book called, "Get to the Center of It" I like the pattern so much I'm doing it (again) for one of the quilts.

Welcome to Quilt Show Saturday ! !

It's Quilt Show Saturday time, do a blog, link with us,
Anything crafty, quilts, sewing, home projects, just as long as
you do it !

I love a great bed, first a good mattress, a mattress pad, and then cotton sheets.
My grandmother lived with us and she taught me to make a bed. The sheets have to be, good to good sides, top sheet folded down. This way when you crawl in the pattern is facing you.
In the summer I like this quilt, it's hand stitched and not as heavy as most.

When I make a bed quilt for myself, I always make the top edge or border
different, so I know it's the top.

The pattern of the blocks are all the same, with a dark brown paisley as
the back ground.

They are 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares.

When I do scrappy, I don't plan color placement, I just go with what I like for each block.

This is how is looks for the spring/fall. I change it in the winter months for a very heavy down comforter.  Thanks for stopping in.
