At The Ringling - "Walk and Talk"

Last weekend we attended our first class here in Florida.
At The Ringling, HERE is their site

It was a "Walk and Talk" about the tree's of Florida, their planting and care.
First class room time and then the walk with the Ringling's Landscape Superintendent, Kevin and Erin from the UF/IFAS Extension of Sarasota County.
Since we purchased my Mom's place we need to do a bit of landscaping. The class has made me want to take the Master Gardener's classes even more.

Quilt from The Magazine Antiques

I'm getting through a pile of reading and found
this wonderful article in

The Magazine Antiques - their site HERE
July/August 2013

Article By Jean M.Burks
Shelburne Memorial Building New York

This quilt is one from the collection made by Florence Peto 1881-1970
Named “Calico Garden”  the quilt was purchased for the museum in 1952 and in 1999 was named one of
“The twentieth century’s Best American Quilts”

If you break down this quilt, it's 9-patch squares set on point, off square are simple applique flowers, border's are squares set on point with corner applique.

Break a quilt down and see all the workings of it.

Gamble Plantation - Ellenton, Florida

Seeing something new in the area !

This is the other house on the property in Ellenton, Florida were the
Gamble Mansion is, I like this one !

I love porches and these are very grand. This home was owned by Major George Patten, purchased in 1872, for $3000.

"To avoid the high cost of maintaining the aging and decaying Gamble Mansion, the son of Major George Patten, Dudley A. Patten, built a more "modern" house in the 1890s. Eventually, the land was subdivided and sold."

Today the house is furnished and operated by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which opens it three times a year for tours, in February, March and November.

Goodwill Bookstore Florida, a little worn but wonderful !

I'm talking about the book and Me, both a little worn !

I love old quilt books and this one does not disappoint. It's from 1935,  There is a wonderful Goodwill book store here, it is all set up as a library and the books are priced from 1.99 and then as this one 5.99. Way cool. (Some more too!)

We stopped with the Grands when they were here, so stopped back and took some time yesterday.

The picture pages are called plates and I think it is a really big deal to have them in a quilt book.  The story is a general account of quilting.

I always keep my eyes open for quilt books, I love them any age, but really look for good condition.

I'm sleeping unbelievable here and last night I slept in my glasses,  and I broke them, so the project today is to find some where to get them fixed.

From Treadle Sewing Machine to Table

I've had this Treadle machine for years and years, it was a Great-Aunts

It had been used as everything but a sewing machine,
from plant stand to desk.

We had moved it to the garage to sale in our sale in April, but after looking at for a day, asked Husband if you could take it apart and we'd move the base.

A bit of time and it was apart.

I decide I just wanted the base and the four drawers which were on the sides.

I finally had some time and the painted started,
Husband cut me a piece of wood for the top.

White base top, my flowers and then about 4 coats of poly.

The drawers with white paint inside, they fit perfect.

My  treadle base table !

The Quilt Ladies Book Collection

Had a VERY sweet email:
"I'm all confused? Quilt Ladies books,  Little Quilt Ladies? Help ME "
Here I go !
"The Quilt Ladies Book Collection" is the stories of Mary Alice, Emily, Helen, Teresa and Jenny. Each book has a story and the quilt pattern they (the Ladies) are making in that book.  The story continues book to book, but each title tells what the books about.

"Little Quilt Ladies" are patterns, no stories. Just Quilt or Applique Patterns.

NOW, I think this may help!

Painted Chest

This is a chest that my Dad's Mother used, my mom's had it for years and give it to me.

painted cedar chest
It was completely black and I've added the white
I sanded the top a bit and used white oil paint, I like the finish of oil paint.
cedar chest painted in master bedroom

Painted the top, handles and the legs.
Learned that painting in Florida with all the humidity drying time is quite a bit longer making this a no hurry project.
