I love applique and I spent many a day on a bleacher or in the car waiting for the boys to finish a practice appliqueing. This is one for the first, hand appliqued and hand quilted.

Hearts are on the first things I learned to applique.

Simple pattern and Color

I've been working with the idea of color. I've started with this simple pattern and using color that work well together. The next one quilt will be the next step in color.

This type of quilt is the way I put colors together for large projects. It's so much easier to change after going little pieces than to change when you have 10 blocks done.

Little Quilt Block of the Month from Guild Newsletter

 I love Holiday's and this quilt has a block for each month.
These were done for a quilt guild and added to the newsletter each month.

With everything happening the past years I've moved away from the local guild. There are seasons for everything and right now, I have so much on my plate, I don't have much more to give. I miss it. Maybe, some day soon.

Heart Quilt of Squares and Triangles

One of my very first designs, from over 20 years ago. At that time, I used graph paper and would draw everything out. The idea of learning a computer program ! Was so off my chart.

I pulled out my notes, and at the time I learned to have a color pop in it. This one was a bit of a learning experience.

If you are a Quilter, take photo's of your quilts. I've learned so much from seeing my work from the different eye of my camera.
 I have a little old Kodak digital, nothing fancy. (Maybe some day) Try it, it's fun !

Amish Colors Quilted Table Runner

Machine Pieced and Hand quilted

My First try with the bold colors of solids.

And the first time I understood what I call "Quilting for Meaning". This is a table runner, simple, colors work, but what makes it is the quilting.

It is hand quilted with very simple hearts. I used a red colored thread and a thin batting that is just enough to hold the stitches.

If, I was to quilt this today, it would have much more hand quilting, and with that would probably loose the simple feel it has..

Turquoise Fabric made in to a My Quilt

Going through the closet I found this turquoise fabric, the cheater's cloth was in the back of the sewing closet and I love it too.

I draw out the blocks and set the fabric placement and just sewed.

A fun couple of days in the sewing room. I think I'm going to tie this quilt for Florida, a gift for myself.

How to Pick your Quilt Colors by The Quilt Ladies

“How do you see color going together?”

I answered very quickly, “You just see it.” But the question has stayed with me. So, I have broken down how I do it.

1) Start with one fabric. Take this one fabric and work from it. Is that one fabric, a dark, medium or light color?

This is a Dark

Add the light and medium. Move and change it until you like it.

Lay them out in front of you.

Then add, a dark medium, a light medium, until you have the mix of what you like.

2) Choose colors and patterns you love. An average a twin size quilt will take me about a week to piece together, and if hand quilted another, 3-4 months. If tied or machine quilted 3-4 weeks, you have so much time and cost involved you have to love it.

3) Natural or background colors. These are the corner stone. More often than not the background color is your light color. Your background color helps bring the blocks together. It does not always need to be a light either, dark or medium work well to, any color can be used.

4) Color Wheel. I’m not a big fan of the color wheel, I do like when colors pops and on most of my quilts the start fabric is not the most prominent color used it in, it is just a starting point.

5) Make one block. This should always be done, a Quilters practice, cut only fabric for one block and live with it for a few days. Especially, if it’s something you’ve never tried before. Most times you will know right away if you like it or not.

6) Have fun. This is the best way to ensure quilt success, when you enjoy the process, your quilt will be fantastic.
