Great, Great Grandmother made My Mom a Quilt

This is the quilt that started it all for me. See Story
I had been making quilted pillows.

We moved to Burlington, IA and I went to a few quilt classes, auctions and was learning about quilting at every turn.

Great, Great Grandmother made My Mom a Pin Wheel Quilt

On a visit down to see us, my mother arrived with this quilt for me. As a child I'd never seen it, never heard anything about it.

Great, Great Grandmother made a Pin Wheel Quilt

My Great-great grandmother had made it for my mother. Mom remembers helping with cutting of the fabric and helped pump the sewing machine.

It's machine pieced and hand quilted.

My Family Ladies and the Rocking Chair we all Love

Quilts Say more than, "Keep me warm"

Pin Wheel Quilt Pattern Block in Yellow and Orange

Long ago, my Great-great Grandmother made this quilt.
I knew nothing of the quilt or her until years and years later.
But this quilt changed a lot in me and in my life.

What I knew, was this rocker. This is (above) my Great Grandmother, Martha Hale. The rocker was her's and she was the one who sat in it.  I remember her kitchen with a long white table and really heavy chairs. I remember the smells and I wish with all my heart I had been older to talk and listen to her.  She lived until she was 93 years old.

This is my Grandmother, Glade,  my hero, my heart and my friend. Grandma  lived, she laughed, she played and she worked very hard in a man's world of her day. She was teaching and I was learning from her until the day she left us, I had the honor of being her grand-daughter.

On one of the very last times I'd visited my Great-Grandmother Hale. My Grandmother Glade remembers me saying, "I love that rocker."   A week before my wedding Grandma Glade asked me to stop down, I did and when I arrived she gave me the rocker. She had  it for years, I'd never seen it in her home. When I asked she said, "I've been holding it for you."

This is my mother in the rocker.

And my Belinda, my sister, with Grandma Glade. Belinda was 9 years old when I was born, she named me, she never played with dolls again, she had me, I was her doll.
She gives me her love and she has mine, 100% until the day I die.

These ladies and this rocker is a staple in my life and in our home, it has rocked many babies, and it has never asked for anything. It's as solid as my family of Ladies.

Happy Mother's Day
to all who are with us and in our hearts today.

Barn Quilt Made to Go on our Fence

I've finished my Fence (Barn) Quilt

This was so much fun. I measured and laid the pattern out
and then painted over a couple of days. Used a paint
pen for the lines and 4 coats of poly. to seal it.

I, of course didn't want to do a normal quilt block.

So, I did an Applique with the square set on point.

I used my patterns from Baskets of Applique Flowers as a reference.
Only available in PDF to your Printer,  you'll need the patterns.

Added quilt lines that you will never see from just a few steps back, but I know they are there, they make me happy !

From Pillow Shams to Throw Pillows

I'm always on the look out for anything quilted at Goodwill and I happened
upon these pillow shams

From Pillow Shams to Throw Pillows
How to take a Pillow Shams and make a Throw Pillows

I washed them in hot water and put them in the dryer.

From Pillow Shams to Throw Pillows

After deciding the size I wanted,

I cut each side, making sure that both pillows would match.

I hand quilted around the white of each pillow and  used the backing from the shams
as the backing of each pillow.

On my couch ready for anything.
