To use a Quilt or NOT ? PLEASE Use the QUILT !

Before I start, this is 100% MY OPINION !
To use a Quilt or NOT ?
That’s the question?  At my group the other day one of the ladies was making a pretty quilt as a gift for a grandchild. The new mom had already said she was not going to let the new baby use it so he would have it when he grows up and the maker, Grandma was thrilled.

I held my tongue, but, WHY??? Please tell me WHY???

I don’t make heirloom quilts, I don’t make show quilts, I quilt plain old quilts, you know the kind you crawl up in and cuddle. The one’s you eat popcorn under and sleep on the couch with.

I want my Grand’s quilts to be chewed on, washed daily or weekly, used as a cape running down the driveway and by all means potty on it. That’s what it’s for.

To curl up in and think its Momma’s arms or Daddy’s hugs, and to feel it and know that Grandma and Grandpa are thinking about them and are only a visit away.

Baby boy's first quilt

I hope my Grand’s quilts are rags when they are big and that their Momma’s hold on to them in that condition. And pulls it out and say, “Remember this?”

I have my Great-Great Grandmothers quilt, which she made for my mother. Mom thinks it was when she was 10, which would make it made in 1938. I asked and mother wanted nothing to do with it. So, I use it, I wash it, I LOVE it. Why not???  It can be 100 degrees out here in Florida, air conditioning on and I still cover myself with it. It just makes me happy !  I think that's what quilts are for.

So, all you Grandma’s out there PLEASE make 2 quilts if one is not to be used, one to love and one to keep???

Just my opinion !

The Story Continues....

Our moving van arrived, not the same truck, not the same driver, BUT, I'm sure they attended the SAME, no customer service work shop as the loading driver ! !
Again, not the company's name who I paid???

So, on May 14, I learned the lesson of, "If I open my mouth, I will destroy you !"
I learned working at a bank, when I have no control, have no power, my chest will tighten, my back between my shoulder blades starts of hurt...and I HAVE to walked away

They broke my Grandmother's Rocker ! No more words......

Husband said very loud, "Get this unloaded...now !"

The pew made it.

And the box of STUFFED fish made it ? ! ! ?  !

So, we are home and we are HAPPY !

Moving to Florida

The story continues...

We sold all our furniture, only taking, the church pew, dining room table and chairs, living room rug and my Grandmothers Rocker. I think that was what was the hardest and at the time, I didn't really understand it. 35 years of STUFF, was gone and I think thats why our movers were not .....human, they didn't get it, it was a job, it was about them, it was NEVER once about us, as customers, as people, not one stick of customer service. Yes, it's just stuff, but not a lot of stuff.

Table and rug in

Pew next, this is a rented truck, this is NOT our movers company, I asked !

On April 26th we headed to see our kids in Minnesota, for 3 days.

Then a couple of days of rest before boarding a flight to
Sunny Florida and our new home

Our corner of the world, our new home and no longer rental property.
I'M HOME !

Keep watching !

A Process of Time and Cleaning OUT my Sewing Room

Cleaning up and OUT of my sewing room this past week has brought up a lot of feelings, ideas and emotions.
When you first start to quilt you discover
there is a 3 step process.
The beginning: The idea, the pattern, the fabric.
The middle: The cutting, the piecing, the quilt top finished
The end: The quilting, by hand/machine and the binding

And that with each step the process
will become complete.

But, going through my fabric closet, cleaning out paperwork, notebooks and idea sheets, I noticed I’ll never be done. And, is that alright with me?
Am I able to let it be alright?

After a week of thinking, I don’t think it’s the things, the buffet, the sewing machine, I think it’s the ideas. The patterns which have been drawn and will never be made, that pull at my heart.   With the fix it mentality I have, these patterns may not get made but may be given? I’m still trying to work that process out in my head?

But, what I have learned, it has to be alright. We have chosen these next steps, not made to make them. I’ll be alright and that my new 3 step process is:

The beginning: Open to all ideas
The middle: Jump in and do
The end: Enjoy the process, my new 3 steps

And, what ever happens,

Laugh, smile and be happy

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's
To those who are with us and to those in our hearts.

My Father left us in 1997 after his fight with colon cancer. This is the quilt I hand quilted sitting in the hospital.
I didn't have anything else pieced to quilt, so I just kept quilting.

It's hanging in my sewing room and think of him when I see it.

After all these years, I still feel him with me, I can hear his voice and when I get on a ladder to do a project, I hear, "Two hands, do it once and do it right."

I'm alright Dad, Thanks for everything !

My Family Ladies and the Rocking Chair we all Love

Quilts Say more than, "Keep me warm"

Pin Wheel Quilt Pattern Block in Yellow and Orange

Long ago, my Great-great Grandmother made this quilt.
I knew nothing of the quilt or her until years and years later.
But this quilt changed a lot in me and in my life.

What I knew, was this rocker. This is (above) my Great Grandmother, Martha Hale. The rocker was her's and she was the one who sat in it.  I remember her kitchen with a long white table and really heavy chairs. I remember the smells and I wish with all my heart I had been older to talk and listen to her.  She lived until she was 93 years old.

This is my Grandmother, Glade,  my hero, my heart and my friend. Grandma  lived, she laughed, she played and she worked very hard in a man's world of her day. She was teaching and I was learning from her until the day she left us, I had the honor of being her grand-daughter.

On one of the very last times I'd visited my Great-Grandmother Hale. My Grandmother Glade remembers me saying, "I love that rocker."   A week before my wedding Grandma Glade asked me to stop down, I did and when I arrived she gave me the rocker. She had  it for years, I'd never seen it in her home. When I asked she said, "I've been holding it for you."

This is my mother in the rocker.

And my Belinda, my sister, with Grandma Glade. Belinda was 9 years old when I was born, she named me, she never played with dolls again, she had me, I was her doll.
She gives me her love and she has mine, 100% until the day I die.

These ladies and this rocker is a staple in my life and in our home, it has rocked many babies, and it has never asked for anything. It's as solid as my family of Ladies.

Happy Mother's Day
to all who are with us and in our hearts today.

Cutting off Points - Quilt Tips from The Quilt Ladies

When sewing a quilt block row together there is nothing worse than opening it up and seeing that you chopped off the points of your triangles, make sure to pin your rows and sew on the side that you can see the most points, if you need to fudge your 1/4” seam allowance, now is the time to do it, and when I say fudge I mean by 1/32 or 1/16, just a bit !
