How to make a Square Quilt with ONLY Squares

Received a phone call from a very dear friend who’s taken the plunge and is learning how to quilt.  HERE – is how she started. The next question is, “How do I do a quilt top? ”

I know when you see a finished quilt it can seem very overwhelming. I’m going to walk you thought making a quilt top over the next few weeks.

Remember, “It’s Only a Square”    Finished Quilt Size:  46”x 46”  1 yard of each color will be more than needed to do this project.

Cut  160 – 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” in assortment of colors (I used a dark, medium and light) approx. 1 yard of each color !

Lay out each block before sewing it together, there is no right way or no wrong way. I’ve included some examples of color placement, these are examples, have fun move colors around and you will need 16 blocks.  Use a ¼” seam allowance and press your seams to one side.

Lay out 3 in each row
And do 3 rows.

You will need a total of 16 pieced block, so have fun, move color around, here is just a few examples:

Take a few weeks and I'll walk you through putting the block together with sashing and borders, let's say 2 weeks ! Keep checking back !

So, get the fabric out, get cutting, piecing and let's make a quilt top  !

Cutting off Points - Quilt Tips from The Quilt Ladies

When sewing a quilt block row together there is nothing worse than opening it up and seeing that you chopped off the points of your triangles, make sure to pin your rows and sew on the side that you can see the most points, if you need to fudge your 1/4” seam allowance, now is the time to do it, and when I say fudge I mean by 1/32 or 1/16, just a bit !

Quilt Show Saturday From the Box

Welcome to Quilt Show Saturday

I was looking for a very old quilt that was in the things from Husband's grandmother.

And I didn't find what I was looking for, I'm sure I will, but did find this.

I did this long ago, I had won the little quilt fabric squares at a quilt guild meeting.

Seam Allowance Quilting Tips from The Quilt Ladies

Use a ¼” seam allowance, this will make your blocks uniform from block to block.

You will need to get to know your machine. Place a ruler under the presser foot, move the needle to the ruler and check your seam allowance. If your presser foot does not have a ¼” mark, place a small piece of masking tape on the plate of your machine to use as your ¼” seam guide.

Quilt Stash - Quilting Tips from The Quilt Ladies

All the fabrics that are purchased and not used, is your stash. I’ve been using my stash more this past year. I purchased these fabrics because I liked them and I still love them today.  I keep all large scrap pieces from quilts I’ve made in the past, say 10” x 10” and larger. I keep nothing smaller, I don’t have the storage space needed

Amy's Creative Side | Bloggers' Quilt Festival

It's that time of the year again, stop over at Amy's Creative Side (click logo)  and see all the wonderful quilts. The Quilt Ladies are a sponsor this year, so make sure to sign up for that too.  I'm doing a bit larger Quilt Show Saturday this week !

The Quilt Ladies Book Collection is a story that follows five friends through The Quilt Ladies 12 books and ebooks.   Each book continues the story and has the pattern/instructions for the quilt the Ladies are making in that book.

I wrote the stories first, designed the quilts and made them all.

Book One "Mary Alice and Emily Brown"

When the books went off to the book designer a few years ago, the quilt design ready for print.

This is "Square Star"  done in a manageable size to take with me.

Being self-published and a solo-business has opened up a whole new way for a quilt book to be presented. You purchase the books and have the patterns all at the same time. No waiting for the pattern release, months or years later.
